The Delibero’s Happy Hour & Speaker Forum is hosted by and for NYC’s independent-minded young professionals. Each month we combine the chance to socialize and network with the open discussion of issues with experts and our own up-and-coming members.

The Delibero’s March 3rd Happy Hour is at Public House, where Marcus Winters of the Manhattan Institute will address the issue of charter schools and public education.

As always, we will be offering excellent drink deals and a PRIVATE BAR that will remain open throughout the event.

Marcus A. Winters is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Winters conducts research and writes extensively on education policy, including topics such as school choice, high school graduation rates, accountability, and special education.

He has performed several studies on a variety of education policy issues including high-stakes testing, performance-pay for teachers, and the effects of vouchers on the public school system. His research has been published in the journals Education Finance and Policy, Economics of Education Review, Teachers College Record, and Education Next. His op-ed articles have appeared in numerous newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and USA Today and he is often quoted on education issues. Winters previously worked as the Senior Research Associate with Manhattan Institute senior fellow Jay P. Greene at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Winters received his B.A. in political science from Ohio University in 2002, an Ph.D. in economics from the University of Arkansas in 2008. He resides in Manhattan.

Brenda S. “Sue” Fulton:
Sue is a 1980 graduate of the US Military Academy and of the first class to admit women. She served for five years in Germany.  During that time, she was investigated for alleged homosexual acts, though the charges were dropped for lack of evidence.  Later she was chosen – as a Lieutenant – to command a Military Intelligence company, which required a high-level security clearance.  She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for that successful command.  After leaving the military, Sue entered the corporate world andis currently a brand director at a pharmaceutical company. Sue resides in North Plainfield, NJ, with her partner. Sue serves as Communications Director for Knights Out, an organization devoted to supporting LGBT West Point alumni.

Mariana Reed:
Mariana Reed hails from The Bronx, New York and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the summer of 2006.  She completed her basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, and trained further as an Ammunitions and Explosives Technician. Mariana received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in August of 2009 to pursue a career in politics. Currently, Mariana works for Dr. Joseph Stiglitz at Columbia University.  Mariana currently holds the title of Miss Teen Latina 2010, is the founder of the non-profit organization, “Love: In A Time Of War,” and is a member of the New York Young Republican Club.

Joe Simenic:
Joe graduated from West Point in 2005, and his cadet duty positions included first semester academic year first sergeant, first semester battalion commander and second semester regimental executive officer. Joe was discharged under the military’s controversial and “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) policy after coming forward to his Commanding Officer and a friend. Joe’s admission of his sexuality came shortly before Ranger school, when he was at the top of his class.  Joe is currently a special assistant to the Governor of New York and recently completed his Masters in Public Administration at Columbia University.
